Designing a Visual Identity to Celebrate the 50th Running of the Falmouth Road Race
-
Established in 1973, the ASICS Falmouth Road Race has become one of the most renowned running events of the summer season. Each year, the race attracts an international field of Olympians, elite, and recreational runners to experience the iconic 7-mile seaside course. The nonprofit Falmouth Road Race organization is dedicated to promoting health and fitness through community programs and philanthropic giving.
The Challenge:
The Falmouth Road Race 50th anniversary campaign needed to commemorate the event's 50th year, boost race registration, and emphasize the organization's dedication to health and fitness through community programs and philanthropy. The campaign also had to attract a broader audience of active people who are passionate about fitness and health. The Solution:
I started by taking a look at some of the landmarks in Falmouth, like the Nobska Lighthouse, the painted red, white, and blue mile markers, and the massive American flag that flies high above the finish line. I noticed some patterns that could help me create a new visual system. The new identity is inspired by the painted mile markers that are along the running route and remain year-round for Falmouth residents, and I chose a bright color palette and a clean display typeface to make it stand out. The system is flexible enough to work for the next 50 years of the race and celebrates its legacy and future.
